Guest Moose Master Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 I'm a little confused about the billing server issue. Why not give everyone who hosts a zone access to it? You can't use it to pull out account passwords or take over squads nor could you do anything with your zone to change settings/cause problems to another.
Dav Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 simple matter of control over the server. Centralise things and there is less room for confusion and for things to get messed up and not be traceable.
»freakmonger Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 Having a server that has a bad setting and crashing the Biller is unacceptable. Giving anybody who can get a $20 hosting account access to the SSC Biller is a very bad idea and could only turnout bad. That is just one reason why access to the Biller is so "strict". Getting access to the Biller is not impossible, just takes time/effort. Most of the time it takes more time/effort than players are willing to put in.
»1587200 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Most of the time it takes more time/effort than players are willing to put in.Na, most of the time it's who you know and how much !@#$%^&* you kiss. If it was about time and effort and a good zone, then Desert Storm and Halo wouldn't have a prayer.
»Purge Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Halo has gone through a lot of time and effort to create itself... what are you talking about?
CRe Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Actually we have had alot of big changes to the zone and there will be a new ds redesigned in a few weeks.
»1587200 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) I don't care what you've added, redesigned, stolen from other games, ripped off, etc. Both your zones still gayer than x`terr and jds. Edited December 17, 2007 by Guest
CRe Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 DS is based on a military operation not a game.
»freakmonger Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Lets not start any DS/Halo/Any Zone bashing in this thread.
»1587200 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Ok, back on topic. SSC billing access - why it's restricted. Does it matter? It's run by a bunch of power mongering !@#$%^&* bags anyway. Who cares about SSC? You have all the power to create YOUR zone, run YOUR biller, directory server, everything! You can do it all yourself, so why bother with SSC? It used to be reserved for the zones that were "good enough" to be connected to it. Now they pretty much let any !@#$%^&*ish zone onto the biller as long as it attracts people. Your zone has population? Welcome to the SSC Biller! Just more people under their control.
»Blocks Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 This isn't exactly addressing the point, but how do we have both a restricted biller and a zone called SSCI Penis? It reflects poorly on the system. There are plenty of jokers who have had an SSC zone in the past because they know someone. That's not to say that we should hand it out to all jokers regardless of if they know someone--if we purport to have a serious, merit-based system, it should be tough for anyone to get a billing slot. By and large, I believe the zones that have SSC billing deserve it. It's a tougher call to say how many zones have been left in the lurch by SSC. Having access to the SSC player-base would definitely encourage development.
Confess Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 I used to think thats true. I disagree now though. Infact, I much prefer non-ssc over SSC. And im an SSC host
Falcoknight Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 This isn't exactly addressing the point, but how do we have both a restricted biller and a zone called SSCI Penis? SSCI Penis launch-night was awesome.
MikeTheNose Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 All wrong. Having billing access is a huge responsibility. People can do a lot of things with it that requires someone who is responsible and allowing people to freely access it would be devestating. The billing is also vulnerable to hacking when there are no restrictions. We don't want everyone to have information on the billing server. Lastly the billing server along with server code can be used to monitor certain messages to and from the billing.

BlueGoku Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 (edited) Syrus, you seem like a very smart guy but some of the stuff you say about the SSC is downright ignorant. You aren't privy to what the SSC does or does not discuss, so I can't see how you can logically say.. well, anything about anything relating to the SSC. Securing the biller? The biller is hosted on a server much like any zone in SS. This server is vulnerable just like any zone's server. I'm sure priitk has taken the proper steps to ensure that it's as secure as possible, but why risk it when the safe and simple thing to do is monitor who has access to it? Any time a zone shows interest in being given access, one of the council members is notified and we put it to a vote. However, to ensure we don't get 10 requests a day from Joe Subgame2ez we've set a few requirements which ensure only zones that won't fold within the next couple of months are given access. And I may as well address the part about the members themselves. Like I said previously, anything you may think about the members or our discussions is pure speculation. For example, this month alone there have been 53 messages sent back and forth between the group. We've just barely passed the middle of the month, and the SSC is only composed of 17 members (including Priit =p). That's roughly 3 messages per every member. We're currently discussing 4 issues. I'd say that's pretty active. Not sure what to say about the corrupt/worthless part, but I can without a doubt vouch for every single member currently on the council on their level headed-ness. Nobody on the council is worthless and everyone has added insightful information to the discussions we have. Some members may be more active than others, but that's to be expected. All of us have -actual- jobs, some more demanding than others, but pretty much everyone that has experienced activity issues has had various responsibilities scaled back. Example being wonderer and kewlair stepping down as billing ops due to their in game time being more limited than when they volunteered for the positions. We aren't here to hold any zones back, and we certainly aren't here just for the sake of having power (what power? this is a 2d game, I manage millions of dollars in investments at work, believe me, I get no kick out of being able to do this or that on here =p). We're here to help, and I think there are enough people that certainly see it that way, and have certainly expressed thanks to us in one way or another. Just ask one of the hundreds and hundreds of people I've helped get their name/squad back over the past year and a half. That's A) because of the council discussion which led to more billing ops being added and B ) because of the persons selected to be given these responsibilities. Edit: Stupid smiley. rootbear75 Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 im not picking either side here, but it would be nice to know who was added, so we know for a fact everything isnt the same as it was a year or whenever ago.
darkhosis Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 (edited) subspace council is a fossil now, priitk is pretty inactive these days and lots of ppl have left. priitk is a very wealthy man now and does not have much time for continuum! theres an open source continuum replacement being worked on, dunno if it will ever happen.. darkhosis Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 im not picking either side here, but it would be nice to know who was added, so we know for a fact everything isnt the same as it was a year or whenever ago.http://sscouncil.com/members.phpthat list is old, there's a lot that are out now.. like ekted, wanderer, bargeld, etc.
BlueGoku Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 That list is updated and accurate. The only person that left the council that is still on the list is Mr Ekted. I'll remove him the next time I update the site, which should be fairly soon. Wonderer only left his post as a billing op, not the council.
Hakaku Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Hmm... Considering I counted 17 people (with PriitK) and :and the SSC is only composed of 17 members (including Priit =p).And the last updates on the site were made in September 2007, which no members have changed ever since, I'd rather say that list is current. Just because you don't see it, doesn't necessarily mean they're either inactive or simply not members. (e.g. Wonderer is still active, because I had contacted him about GetContinuum.com not too long ago) Though, correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.Edit: BG beat me to it :/
