»Rowen Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 I was noticing... that the trademarks to subspace have been abandoned. http://www.uspto.gov/ Search for "Subspace" Says that it has been abandoned, and that VIE filed for the abandonment. Thus said, the name continuum is quite useless vs subspace. The only use I see is labeling the client software.

rootbear75 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 new client release: Subspace 2 and freak... that link doesnt work
L.C. Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 PriitK ought to rename Continuum to Subspace. -_-
MikeTheNose Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 Continuum is a client, subspace is a game. Don't need to confuse people.
»Maverick Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 Don't need to confuse people ... even moreIt's already confusing, mike
Dav Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 as far as many newer members are concerned continuum = game subspace = older game being as they never knew subspace. But yeah the next big thing perhaps should be subspace II or something.
»doc flabby Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 The trademark subspace expired 2 years ago. This is old new tho im sure i saw a thread about this a long time ago. All it means is you can call/sell a game using the name "SubSpace" now. However. the copyright of the images and ships, code, everything from VIE infact still remains.
Ophie Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 The trademark subspace expired 2 years ago. This is old new tho im sure i saw a thread about this a long time ago.Don't try to act all "cool" and say that you saw a similiar thread to this a long time ago, and then trying to say it's "old news" ... thats not cool. if you did see it, prove it.
MikeTheNose Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 Ophie, as a council rep I can say that this is old news
Ophie Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 Ophie, as a council rep I can say that this is old news IF you didnt know, SSCouncil is a joke. Now that's old news.

»Rowen Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 I just believe, as my years in industrial organizational psychology has told me about branding and marketing, that two names are simply bad. We're not establishing a brand as VIE once did, but a continuation of a community. Also, the name continuum is over used, over trademarked, and soppy in a pool of brand confusion. Subspace, the community, has been very active in one form or another and as a brand a pretty strong one until the continuum client took it's hit. Google : 27,000,000 results ContinuumGoogle : 6,000,000 results Subspace - - Most of the front results are from this community I believe that it's not a matter of trademark anymore, as it could be reasonably argued that the trademark has not only been deactivated but unpatrolled and diluted to general use of the game today. As for MikeTheNose: What's up my homie!Continuum is a client, subspace is a game, but there is definitely brand confusion between the two. Well, maybe not for you and I, but of course for all those new people that hit subspacedownloads, and the casual player. Priitk chose wise at the time to adopt a different name but his unwise choice was that of Continuum. This was meant to be educational, informative, and well not starting of a flame war.
Dav Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 indeed I think continuum was a good choice of name at the time, subspace and continuum are words that to the more nerdy among us are well related. I can see that calling it subspace would have been, well suicide... As far as the future goes i think it would be nice to call it all subspace again. This site is subspace central, we have subspace downloads and many more as subspace.

»Rowen Posted February 27, 2007 Author Report Posted February 27, 2007 Yes. But the original post touched lightly on the issue.
candygirl Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 keep it the way it is "the name continuum is fine.
Dav Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Well continuum and subspace being used together confuses newbies For those of us that know something about this game its a non issue, we know the client is continuum and the game is subspace. Problem comes in when somione called it subspace with a newbie abround leading to confusion. On top of that all the !@#$%^&*es are "subspace" like SS central and subspace downloads which is more confusing to newbies. Its also nice to take the game back to its roots bnow we have the chance.
L.C. Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Subspace used to be the client. Subspace is the game. Continuum should be Subspace, because it is and we can.
Gravitron Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 SubSpace is dead. Long live SubSpace. Now you have continuum, for worse.
Dav Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 why dont you change your avater to say continuum then?
Gravitron Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Because geezer captains such as myself believe in sinking with our ship.
Synook Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 (edited) Google : 27,000,000 results ContinuumGoogle : 6,000,000 results Subspace - - Most of the front results are from this community I just have to say - Continuum is a more widly used word than Subspace. After all, continuum means something most people know, while Subspace is a rather obscure word. Also, I believe that the full name of the game will remain to be 'Subspace Continuum'...Also, what is the name of the server again? Edited March 10, 2007 by Synook
