Hi, Here is a bunch of bots using the rendered Star Hawk ship ( see this thread ) surrounding my Star Lion ship. Being used to playing Continuum the ultra sharp and detailed look of the rendered ships is quite pleasing. This board for some reason makes the images a little fuzzy, so you can see this image and a few others on my site. Just, check out the the slide show on that page. - Rich - http://www.phoenixusc.com/images/header4.jpg

Hi, I am working on some concepts for the design of ships used in Phoenix USC. The following images are early concepts for ships in the game and will change over time but are looking pretty good so far. The names are internal development names for the ships. More soon. - Rich - Star Drifter: Fighter/Interceptor Class http://www.phoenixusc.com/Personal_Post_Data/star_drift.png Star Fox: Fighter/Interceptor Class http://www.phoenixusc.com/Personal_Post_Data/star_fox.png Star Hammer: Fighter/Bomber Class http://www.phoenixusc.com/Personal_Post_Data/star_hammer.png Star Hawk: Fighter Class http://www.phoenixusc.com/Personal_Post_Data/star_hawk.png Star Lion: Fighter C…

Hi, Here are a few shots of the client launch application (CLA) development. The CLA features a cool star field background and custom GUI components. The CLA will let you call up a list of zone servers and quickly launch the client and login to a server. It also allows you to modify game, graphics, sound and other settings. The GUI components are also used in the Phoenix client (windows, list boxes, sliders, buttons and more). I wish I could post the CLA as it is much cooler looking then the images and features translucent panels and a very cool animated star field effect. - Rich - http://www.phoenixusc.com/Personal_Post_Data/cla1.jpg http://www.phoenixusc.com/Person…

Hi, I have updated the Phoenix USC message board design and I have made a logo for Phoenix USC. You can check it out here. I'm also about to start testing the new server design which is based on an authoritative server. If this goes well I may start to maintain a server for open beta testing starting first from my office here at my location on Windows but soon to a dedicated Linux based server which will handle hundreds of clients. I'll keep you posted on my progress. - Rich -

Hi, I am a firm believer that projects like Ouya ( http://www.ouya.tv/ or Kickstarter ) are a big part of the future for console gaming. With the blowup over XBox One, projects like Ouya are so welcome from a developer standpoint. I have already started to port Phoenix USC to Monkey ( Coding Language http://www.monkeycoder.co.nz/ ) which supports the Android OS and will have an option to work on Ouya which is Android based. Supporting Android was always in mind when writing Phoenix USC and I can't wait to see it running on that OS. On a side note, indie developer support for XBOX ONE is gone. MS says they may at sometime have a independent developer program but I w…

Hi, I have decided to start a beta testing group. This team will be testing and making recommendations for fixes, changes and new features. Candidates wishing to join should 'ideally' have a background in subspace and have participated in other beta testing programs. But, I am open to those who know subspace (or similar game) and have a good reputation in the subspace or other similar community. The beta testing team will have it's own private forum here and be trusted to maintain secrecy. This will help insure better security for Phoenix USC as we develop ways to prevent the game from being hacked. Additionally members of the beta testing team will be listed in the cre…

Hi, This video shows the new features of the game engine such as lighting, shadows and two levels of map play. I am just about finished with the Phoenix game engine and I will be server testing with the beta team. The next video will show actual space combat. Yay. - Rich - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC51HYvM_eQ&feature=youtu.be

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5WthPCdSRk&feature=player_embedded Hi, I'm still hard at work developing Phoenix USC. I thought I would post this development video of Phoenix USC. Featured here is the new duel layer of play that lets you play on two levels on a map. This allows overhead ramps, balconies and more, even an entire second level layer on the same map. Options will allow the upper layer to be semitransparent, solid or invisible. The pink and purple bars at the ends of the ramps are switches and will be hidden in an actual game scenario. I have added a exhaust trail system that can have several trailing tails behind a ship. I have also added an ove…

Hello all, I have decided to start a work log on this project. For now I will keep it casual. 12-14-2010 Since the last release of the client (A.25d) I have been working on world scaling. This is a feature I had long wanted in SubSpace. So I now have map scaling in, just like zooming in or out (*In Real Time). I totally love it. Just imagine being able to zoom out for that wide field of view. So I am going through all my code now adjusting for world scale incorporation. I had always planned to do this but I still have a few bugs to fix during this change. Another reason to include world scaling is special FX. I would like have multiple planes of play. For example…

Hi, I added Poenix USC on IndieDB ( http://www.indiedb.com ). It will take a day or two for them to approve Phoenix but it will be interesting to see what reaction I get from there. I'll post a link as soon as they email me. I also took a quick look at Desura ( http://www.desura.com/ ) which looks to be at first glance a better option then Steam. At least for PC games. - Rich -

Static Background (best to watch) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXh6wn8qseI Tiled Background http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyhaG3_sJog&feature=youtu.be Hi, I have uploaded 2 videos the first shows a local and remote ship on a fixed static background (planet) and the other show a tiled background. I had to convert these videos so the aspect is a little off but they show the game engine in action. The new map will be a CTF (capture the flag) style game for testing sort of like Trench Wars. I have added con trails (exhaust) for both local and remote ships. This looks very cool when you have many ships with different con trials. The same particle effect can be used…

Hi, I have a version of the client launch application up here: Phoenix USC Board http://www.phoenixusc.com/board/showthread.php?tid=29# Direct Link http://www.phoenixusc.com/phoenixusc_apps/Client_Launch_App_3.zip This version is testing news feed, zone ads, zone server listbox and general GUI components. For now you can access the 'News', 'Zone Servers' and 'Exit' buttons as well as ship select. Testing this will let me know if there are any issues with TCP networking and interface. I should also add I am only using one texture for the skin so the look will be better a few versions down the road. Thanks for testing. - Rich -

http://www.phoenixusc.com/images/logoart.jpg Art by Nick Sheets Hi, I thought it would be a cool Idea to start a friendly logo art competition for Phoenix USC. All I can reward the winner with is the credit, but you will be immortalized in the Phoenix USC credits. I'm looking for a logo featuring a phoenix (bird). Something I can place here and there and on the main page so it should be at least 200 x 200 (maybe 150 x 150) pixels in size. No deadline here, when I see one that is a clear winner I'll let you know. Thanks, and have fun. - Rich -

Hi, I have the new message board up and running well. Aside from a few tweaks it is ready to go and I happy with the features and support it will provide. I'm going to leave the webpage (non-message board) with the one main page for now and shift to coding Phoenix USC. I'll catch the webpage up as soon as I have Phoenix USC's last alpha test finished. I've posted in the work log here with the basic time table and plan for going forward. Things are going pretty smoothly and it will not be long before beta testing begins. - Rich -

Hi, I have Phoenix compiling on Linux. There are a few issues I'm working through all to do with the GUI framework (OS only) that my programming language uses. This is why it is best to port code as early as possible to identify cross platform incongruities. The good news is that aside from the GUI issues, Phoenix is running great on Linux and the speed is comparable to similarly equipped Windows system. On my system here Linux is about a 1/3 faster then windows. Debian 7 (Wheezy) is really much faster the Ubuntu on my Nvidia card and the Nouveau video driver is performing well. In addition the networking seems to be working well which is a relief. I will be splittin…

Hi, I'm working on a proper website design for Phoenix that you can checkout here: http://www.phoenix.subspace.co/test/ EDIT- This one is better I think. http://www.phoenix.subspace.co/test2/ I just have the main page up right now but you can see what I have in mind. On the development front I have most of the GUI elements (list box, slider, text field, etc) finished which will work for the client as well as the client launch application (CLA). The CLA is coming along and I should have a test version of it up soon for Windows and possibly Linux. The client and server will also be available to test in a month or so and will be the last alpha test before beta. I h…

Hi, Working on a client launch app that will function similar to Continuum's. I had to write my own button code as this is needed anyway for the Phoenix client window system and better cross platform compatibility. Here is an image of my progress. I'll be placing a zone server list on the right side and spinning images of the ships where the two arrow buttons are. More to come. - Rich - http://www.phoenix.subspace.co/client_launch_app.png

Richard, It looks good--very professional. Have you thought at all about providing players with customization options, similar to League of Legends, which can be earned over time, or purchased outright? The reason I bring it up is, this model seems like a good way to keep a game free to play, and I think it increases retention by rewarding players for their time investment. Any thoughts on this?
